Ceremony Commemorates 20th Anniversary Of 9/11 Boatlift
NEW YORK, NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 10: The Statue of Liberty is seen through the spray created by the NYFD fireboat Three Forty Three during the 20th anniversary commemoration of the September 11 boat lift on the Hudson River along Lower Manhattan on September 10, 2021 in New York City. The fireboat is named for the number of FDNY members who were killed during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. On that day 20 years ago, a volunteer fleet of ferries, yachts, tugboats and other watercraft rescued almost half a million people who were stranded in Lower Manhattan after other forms of transportation were cut off following the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.
And since that date, 257 more firefighters have died from the air they breathed during the rescue and recovery of the 9/11 WTC victims.
